Shoe Makeover

I have had these shoes for a couple of years and they started to look really ratty.  My big toe nails had cut holes in the toe of the shoe and it looked really bad.  I had seen the idea of covering them with fabric on pinterest and I didn't have a pair of good school shoes anymore so I thought, why not.

First I cut a circle out of a scrap piece of fabric to sew on the inside so I couldn't still feel the hole with my toe and to keep in from ripping again.  I kind of just sewed it wherever just to make sure it was good and stuck.

Ta da!

For the fabric I just eyeballed how big of a rectangle I would need hemmed one of the longer ends and then pinned it in place while I traced where it would meet the sole of the shoe.  I just wanted it to come up to the stitching that you can see in the picture above.

Then I folded it on the red line and pinned it like every half inch (I didn't take pictures).  I sewed around the edge and then, very tediously, hand stitched around the fabric doing my own kind of whip stitch thing to sew it to the shoe.

Yeah I know it's fraying on the corner there but I'm planning to fix that.

I think they turned out really cute.  I was thinking of either sewing or gluing some baker's twine around the base to fill in the crack between the new fabric and the sole.  I was thinking red and white, gray, or navy blue.   What do you think?
